Beantown Buzz: Make that NetWORK!
Intern Networking Event

June 17, 2013
Federal Reserve Bank of Boston

On June 17, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce hosted “Beantown Buzz: Make that NetWORK!”  The event promoted the value of peer-to-peer networking and internship programs as means to improve talent retention in the Boston area. The 130 interns represented a variety of industries, ranging from accounting to construction and fine arts to commercial real estate.

Kenneth C. Montgomery, First Vice President of the Boston Fed, delivered the opening remarks, followed by Paul Guzzi, President and CEO of the Chamber, who encouraged the students to maximize their internship experiences, connect with business leaders and peers, and stay in Boston following graduation. Alicia Sasser Modestino, Senior Economist of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston’s New England Public Policy Center, also provided an overview of the research that led to the event, focusing on key findings from her recent policy brief: Retaining Recent College Graduates in New England: An Update on Current Trends.

The interns participated in a series of speed-networking activities with their peers and attended two panel discussions – “Getting the Most Out of Your Internship” and “Preparing to Enter the Job Market.” Panelists included representatives from Bentley University, the Boston Fed, the Chamber, John Hancock, and PwC.  The panelists offered practical guidance, such as the importance of networking with peers and colleagues, the value of asking questions and bringing a professional attitude to the job, and embracing every opportunity to take on new challenges.

This is one of many joint events that the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce plan to hold throughout the year to improve retention of recent college graduates in the region.
