Event Overview

This seminar brought together practitioners from community development, education, affordable housing, public health, public safety and related fields to discuss neighborhood-based efforts to address the interwoven challenges of concentrated poverty and economic mobility. Speakers discussed local initiatives in a variety of small- and large-city settings that showed early promise for neighborhood and population-scale improvement, with a special focus on work that:

  • Targeted intensive wrap-around services to children and families in a focused geographic area to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty;
  • Connected low-income residents/ places with regional employment opportunities and resources;
  • Linked neighborhood improvement projects (e.g. housing, infrastructure, commercial development) with efforts to boost human capital development for local residents.
