Biography
Tim Sweeney, deputy chair and a Class C director, is the chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Liberty Mutual Insurance. Sweeney joined the company in 1993 and held various leadership roles before becoming president of the U.S. personal lines business in 2009. In 2018, he was named president of the global consumer and small commercial unit and became president of Liberty Mutual in 2021. He was named chief executive officer in 2023 and elected chairman of Liberty Mutual Holding Company, Inc., Liberty Mutual’s parent company, in 2025. Sweeney serves on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership and the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. He’s on the Suffolk Construction Board of Advisors, Delaware North Board of Advisors, and the Mass General Brigham President's Board of Advisors. He chairs the annual Aspire fundraiser at Massachusetts General Hospital, and he serves on the MIT president’s CEO advisory board. He is a member of the Business Council and the Geneva Association and is the former board vice chairman of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Sweeney holds a bachelor’s in economics from Harvard University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
